Herr wins Miata Challenge at VIR

ALTON, Va. (October 27, 2002) -- Polesitter Chip Herr, of Litiz, Pa., won the Pro Miata Challenge Race, part of the VIR SpeedFest Presented by the Justin Bell GT Motorsports Experience, at VIRginia International Raceway. Niki Coello, of Wuakesha, Wis., and Shawn Dewey, of Townsend, Del., completed the top-three.

At the start of the 13-lap race, the field went four abreast down the front straight. Exiting turn one, Jim Daniels, in the No. 76 RCPMotorsports.com Mazda Miata took the lead ahead of Herr, the polesitter. By the end of the first lap, Herr had retaken the lead and begun to establish a gap on second place.

As the race progressed, Herr, in the No. 24 Warwick Autopark Mazda Miata, built his lead, while Daniels and Coello, in the No. 81 www.PouredFoundations.com Mazda Miata, battled for second place. On lap 11, Daniels retook second place, having previously lost the position on lap seven. At the checkered flag, Herr crossed the finish line 5.169 seconds ahead of Daniels, averaging 76.572 mph. Following the race, Daniels was penalized for a technical infraction, promoting Coello and Dewey to second and third.

"The car felt great," said Herr, age 20. "I love this track and came here a couple times to get ready for this race."

Completing the top five were Randy Saucier, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Robert Stretch, of Dallas, Texas.
