Evans Tops MX-5 Cup Practices at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, Canada (August 27, 2010) -- Nick Evans, of Powell, Ohio, topped the combined practice charts after two 30-minute SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup sessions on Friday morning in preparation for Sunday's race at the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport at Mosport International Raceway.
Evans posted a time of 1:35.997 (92.234 mph) in the second of the two morning practices, placing his No. 28 Team MER/Mazda/Sparco Mazda MX-5 at the top of the combined charts. The 21-year-old was nearly a second faster than he went in the morning session, where he turned a time of 1:36.828 (91.424 mph) to sit third on the charts at the 10-turn, 2.459-mile circuit.
"Every single lap, I like the track more and more and am getting more comfortable," Evans said. "I can feel the differences in every single corner and I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it. It takes a little while to get used to it. It's really fast, and the walls are really close. Any mistake can cost you. But everyone at Team MER has been coaching me a lot and has helped me learn the tricks here."
Before he was a racer, Evans was a race fan, and his enthusiasm showed in his first visit to the track that is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010. Today's date marks the 43rd anniversary of the first of eight Formula One races held at the track between 1967 and 1977, won by Jack Brabham.
"It's incredible to be here," Evans continued. "For me, its one of those tracks you always dream about driving but you never know if you'll get the opportunity. To be on a track with such a historic Formula One background, in an anniversary season, it's just awesome."
Following Evans on the time charts was another young driver making his first visit to Mosport, Michael Cooper, of Syosset, N.Y. Cooper posted his fast time of 1:36.027 (92.186 mph) in leading the early session in his No. 84 AMG Racing/Bromante Landscaping & Design MX-5.
"I've never been anywhere fast like this in my first year of racing, but I love fast," Cooper said. "It's like the first time we went to Road America, and everyone warned me about the kink there, and how scary it is -- but I love that thing. Yesterday in the test we were quick, but didn't push too hard. This morning we were quick again, and I think we might have a little bit more. I think we've got a chance to take one of the top three spots tomorrow, but you never know until you get into the session and start to see some times."
Brad Rampelberg, of San Jose, Calif., was third in his No. 4 AMG Racing/Mazda/Cobalt Brakes MX-5. Rampelberg trailed just his teammate in the early session, posting a time of 1:36.304 (91.921 mph) for his fastest time of the day.
Championship leader Justin Piscitell was fourth in the No. 89 Team MER/DAMG Worldwide/Merchant Services MX-5. Like his teammate, Piscitell was quicker in the second session, running a best time of 1:36.490 (91.744 mph).
ALARA Racing's Lyonel Kent completed the top five on the combined practice chart after a best time of 1:36.963 (91.296 mph) in the No. 13 ALARA Racing/Bulldog Productions MX-5. Kent's time came in the first of the two sessions.
