Nick Evans has Successful Weekend at Autobahn

-Joliet, IL.- Nick Evans had arguably his most successful weekend to date in the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup races at Autobahn Country Club, part of the Harrah's Autobahn Grand Prix presented by Mazda. (July 30-August 1) The Powell, OH. driver who races exclusively with the support of Mazda advanced two spots in the points championship and added another pole and podium to his CV after the race weekend.

Evans had to make quick sense of another circuit he has seen little of, but the 20 year-old has become well versed with that task, being near the sharp end in every practice session of the 3.56 mile road course.

Qualifying for race one, placed Evans second on the grid to Brad Rampelberg. At the drop of the green, Evans stalked Rampelberg for several laps, eventually making his move for the lead. After leading for nearly a lap, Evans hit reduced traction in one of the circuit's corners and spun, dropping the Team MER driver to seventh. Evans made quick work, regaining all but one spot, to finish second to Rampelberg, three tenths shy of his first Playboy MX-5 Cup victory.

"In the opening laps I felt I had a really strong car," Evans said from the podium. "I pushed hard to get to the lead so I could gap the field, but hit some mud at the apex of 16 and spun. Luckily, I was able to recover quickly fighting my way back to second. I'm very happy to be back on the podium, especially in front of my new partner, ProMotion Driver Development. As always, Team MER did a great job with the Mazda MX-5, it's always a pleasure to drive for them, BFGoodrich and Sparco."

Qualifying for race two was situated late in the day after race one. Evans blistered the track qualifying record, recording his second pole in three races. "I think it's pretty important to get the lap early when the tires are fresh, It was obviously a good run for Team MER," Evans said.

In race two, Evans would be at the point for the first half of the race, but would slide off circuit coming on to the front straight falling to second place. Fighting a diabolically loose machine Evans would exit the circuit again late in the race and fall to fourth where he would later finish.

"This was a tough one! The last half I was doing everything I could just to stay with the leader, Our result was a bit disappointing after starting from pole, but it's still a strong finish and we learned some valuable information for the next race at Mosport," commented a disappointed Evans after the weekend.

After his Autobahn success, Evans sits fifth in points in preparation for the round at Mosport: August 27-29. As always, Evans races with the support of MAZDA and MAZDASPEED, BFGoodrich, Sparco, Team MER and ProMotion Driver Development.
