Mazda Mx-5 Cup: Larry Webster and ART return to the MX-5 Cup at Mosport
Forced to miss the 2nd round of the SCCA Sirius Satellite Mazda MX-5 Cup series at Lime Rock, Car & Driver Magazine's Larry Webster returns to the third round of the MX-5 Cup at Mosport this weekend. "We had some unforeseen issues that came about preventing us from racing at Lime Rock, but we're excited to debut our own car from Mosport onwards."
Starting the season at Laguna Seca in a rental provided by P1 Motorsports, the Advantage Racing Technologies (ART) team worked to develop a quick and comfortable setup that complimented Webster's driving style. With the support of his own ART team and the P1 Motorsports crew, Webster used his racecraft, speed, and smarts to turn his 10th place qualifying position into a 4th place finish by race's end. "Laguna was a great series and season opener for the MX-5 Cup. P1 was kind enough to provide us with a car and let our ART crew dig in to develop the MX-5's handling. It took us a few sessions, but by the race, I was comfortable mixing it up with some of the guys that had been perfecting their own cars for months."
That same setup, modified to suit the demands of the harrowing Mosport track, will see Webster look to regain the lost ground in the driver's championship. "Missing the 2nd round at Lime Rock was beyond our control, but the real killer is that we came away from Laguna 3rd in the championship (Webster finished 4th, but the 3rd place finisher was penalized and docked points, promoting Webster from 4th to 3rd in points) and are now way back in 12th after missing the last race. I have my work cut out for me and have to drive near perfect races for the rest of the year to make up places in the championship!"
Like Laguna Seca, Webster hasn't driven at Mosport, yet as shown in the Laguna race, Webster is a quick study when it comes to learning a track and getting up to speed. "There are a number of tracks on the calendar I've never seen before, but I love the challenge of developing my skills and the car's handling at any track I'm at. Mosport should be a real blast--it's the ultimate driver's track from what I've seen. Thanks again to Mazda, Hankook, the SCCA, SPEED Channel, and Sirius for providing the most exciting sportscar spec series on the planet!"
