ONTARIO, Canada. (May 19, 2001) - Warren Stilwell, of Hartville, Ohio, successfully defended his SCCA Pro Racing Pro Spec Racer crown Saturday at Mosport International Raceway. Steve Ott, of Brighton, Colo., and Chris Funk of, Kansas City, Mo., completed the top three.
Driving the No. 28 Stilwell Racing Spec Racer, Stilwell once again dominated Mosport, setting yet another track record with a race average of 90.503 mph. In a race filled with new records and constant lead changes, Stilwell finally pulled away from his battle for the lead with eventual sixth place finisher Keith Scharf in the HUNT RACING TECH HYPER-V car when he lost 4TH gear.
"It seemed like there were so many fast guys out there today," said Stilwell. "I basically just tried to pair with some of the quicker drivers in the field. When Scharf lost a gear late in the race I was able to pull out to a sizable lead and that was it."
Ott, in the No. 48 Spec Racer, captured his first-career top-three finish in the series and set a record with the fastest lap at 1:35.756 (92.477mph). Ott started third and was able to move up throughout the race after a poor start, and capped off his exciting ride with a last-lap pass of third-place finisher Chris Funk in the HUNT RACING PEARL STREET BREWERY #0 car.
"The last lap was great," said Ott. "I had a run on him [Funk], so I just put my foot in it and hoped it would work. It was a tough race and it takes a lot to get around these guys. They are all tough."
In the No. 0 HUNT RACING Pearl Street Brewery Spec Racer, Funk claimed his 12th career top-three finish in a race where he started fifth. "I actually got a really bad start," said Funk. "We ended up three-wide coming into turn one- I decided to back off so I could live to tell the tale after the race."
The KML Greased Lightning Award went to Chris Funk of HUNT RACING.
