LEXINGTON, Ohio (June 9, 2001)-Keith Scharf, of St. Louis, Mo., stole the pole from Keith Grant, of Memphis, Tenn., with under two minutes remaining in the final qualifying session for Saturday's Round Three Pro Spec Racer race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Grant will be forced to now start in the second position, and Jim Goughary Jr., of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., will start third.

Taking his fourth career pole, Scharf, driving the No. 82 Tech Hyper-V Spec Racer, nearly broke the qualifying record set in 1997 by "Mr. Mid-Ohio", Warren Stilwell. With a fast lap of 1:38.948 (82.152 mph), Scharf was less than two-tenths off the record pace.

"I was pretty much alone out there for most of the session and I knew it would take a good draft to get it done," said Scharf. "But Warren is the man here at Mid-Ohio and I was fortunate to fall into the draft with him and gain momentum. On what turned out to be one of the last laps I looked up at the scoreboard. I saw my time and told my crew that lap was a real flyer."

(On Stilwell's dominance at Mid-Ohio) Having the pole here at Mid-Ohio means that I have some really big shoes to fill."

Grant, pilot of the No. 40 Grant Racing Spec Racer, led throughout the final stages of qualifying and turned in a lap time of 1:39.472 (81.719 mph). Goughary Jr., No. 29 Ducksmart.com Spec Racer, looks to overtake Stilwell in the points. Stilwell leads 29 to 28 in the standings and will start today's race from the fifth position.
