TOPEKA, Kan. (June 20, 2003) -- The Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires takes to the track this weekend in Portland, Ore., for Round Five of the seven round Pacific Tour Championship, part of the G.I. Joe's 200 Champ Car weekend. With only three races remaining in the championship, drivers will be focusing on scoring every point possible on the 1.969-mile permanent road course.
"I'm really looking forward to this weekend," said Bobby Carter, who leads the Pacific Tour standings with 130 points. "I've never been to Portland so I've been calling people to get pointers and hopefully I can get up to speed quickly."
While Carter may not be familiar with the Portland layout, he has shown himself to be very capable behind the wheel of a Miata. In the four Pacific Tour events run so far this season, Carter has started from the pole in every event and brought home victory on three occasions. The lowest Carter has finished this season is a fourth place at Buttonwillow, only 0.498-second behind race winner Izzy Sanchez, who trails Carter by 19 in the Pacific Tour standings with 111 points.
"With only three races to go, I need to score maximum points in Portland," said Sanchez. "To help me this weekend, I've brought my brother [Luis] as my secret weapon. He's really good at setting up the car and will be able to help me on the track."
Behind Carter and Sanchez in the standings are Jon Davies, Derek Smith and Scott Webb, with 88, 84 and 77 points, respectively.
This weekend's event is the first of two high-profile weekends that the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires has on its 2003 schedule. In addition to running with the Champ Cars in Portland this weekend, the Atlantic Tour will run a doubleheader event at historic Road America Aug. 1-3, in conjunction with the Champ Car Mario Andretti Grand Prix of Road America.
