This past weekend saw the first action of the season for the Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) Pro Spec Series. Hunt racing having fielded two cars for the two opening races this past weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, Phoenix, Arizona.
In Saturday's action, Keith Scharf of St. Louis, MO in the tech Clears and Primers #82 car qualified in the 4TH position, and Chris Funk in the Pearl Street Brewery #0 car qualified 8TH. Unfortunately for Scharf, on lap three going into turn one, the #29 Racerman Motorsports car driven by past Series Champion James Goughary, didn't like being passed by Scharf who had moved into the #2 position by passing him, and nudged the #82 in the rear, sending Scharf spinning and collecting the #8 car driven by Neil Tilbor. Both Scharf and Tilbor were out of the race. Chris Funk though, in the #0 Pearl Street Brewery car, drove a smart race, finishing in the 7TH position!
The second race was the feature on Sunday, which saw Scharf in the tech Clears and Primers #82 car starting in the 6TH position and Funk in the Pearl Street Brewery #0 car starting in the 13TH position. Again, Scharf worked his way up through the field, and then on lap 8 in turn 7, he was again hit in the rear by the #29 car sending him spinning off the track, loosing his tail section. This time he was able to continue, having fallen back to the 18TH position. Unlike in race one on Saturday, this was seen by the stewards, and the #29 car was Black Flagged! Without his tail section, Scharf sank down in his seat, and drove the car up through the field on a mission to the 5TH position, and finally finishing the race in 6TH position.
On the other hand, Funk, in the #0 car, fell back as far as 18TH, but also came on strong in the second half of the race, bringing the Pearl Street Brewery car back to finish in the 9TH position, giving Hunt Racing two cars in the TOP TEN, and giving Funk is second TOP TEN finish of the season.
Damage to the #82 car was minimal, and repaired at the track. The #0 car had no damage.
