Houston, TX Caroline Wright returns to the announcer booth for the 1999 Texaco Grand Prix of Houston, Sept 24-26. Wright will co-anchor the PA with Chicago radio personality Paul Brian. Wright made history in 1998 as the first woman to call the track action for CART when she co-anchored the inaugural Houston race.
My friends teased me about being hired to talk about racing for three days. They say I talk about racing 365 days a year...for free, quipped Caroline. Announcing the race is much like watching a race with your friends at home. You watch the screen and talk about what you see. The only difference is that you have 60,000+ people eavesdropping on your comments.
Caroline is no stranger to the microphone. She is a 13-year radio veteran, serving as an air talent and promotions specialist for legendary stations KISS San Antonio and KLOL Houston from 1986-1993. She chose to hang up her headphones to pursue motorsports full-time. Wright has six SCCA championships to her credit as well as competing in and finishing the 1999 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Her other professional racing experience includes 4 seasons in the Pro Neon Challenge. Wright now combines her experience as a driver and media professional to describe the CART spectacle.
"My first-hand knowledge gives me a unique perspective that most announcers don't have," Wright explains. "I would never presume to know what it feels like to be in the cockpit of a Champ car, but the fundamentals of racing are still the same and that insight is what I hope to share with the spectators."
At the drop of the checker flag, Wright is northbound for Mid-Ohio to compete in the 1999 SCCA Valvoline Runoff's where she will vie for the SCCA T2 class national championship in her 1997 Kenny Brown Mustang Cobra. The Runoff's will be televised live on Speedvision Oct. 8-10.
