Goulart Wins Third Race in A Row
BRASELTON. GA. (April 24, 2004) - Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn., won Round Three of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Road Atlanta. Completing the top-three is Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga. and Enzo Potolicchio, of Venezuela.
In ideal warm temperatures, the first race of the Formula SCCA doubleheader at Road Atlanta got underway. At the green flag, the field went three-wide into turn one, with Goulart maintaining the lead ahead of Jonathan Klein and Chris Meredith. Running nose-to-tail the lead trio battled for position. Getting a good run on Goulart, Meredith took the lead in turn one on lap three. Battling Meredith for position, Goulart, in the No. 70 www,dolphinmotorsport.com/Bob Berman Dolphin Motorsports Formula SCCA, retook the lead when Meredith went off-course. As Meredith rejoined the race, Futrelle, in the No. 97 Meco Inc of Augusta Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA, moved into third position. Posting the fastest laps of the race, Goulart steadily built his lead, until he encountered lapped traffic, allowing Klein to close the gap. Running side-by-side down the front straight, Klein took the lead on lap 12. While battling for position Klein suddenly slowed and pulled off-course on lap 15, giving Goulart a sizeable lead over Futrelle. For the remainder of the race, Goulart ran uncontested ahead of Futrelle and Potolicchio, in the No. 22 Fondo Unico Social Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA. At the checkered flag, Goulart had won his third consecutive Formula SCCA Championship race by 6.709 seconds.
"It was a really tough race," said Goulart, who won both rounds of the Formula SCCA Championship at Sebring. "The team gave me a great car and I enjoyed battling Chris [Meredith] and Jonathan [Klein] for the lead. Hopefully I can keep my win streak going tomorrow."
"To be honest I had a fourth place car," said Futrelle, who captured his second consecutive podium finish. "I tried to stay out of trouble and score points. We should be battling for the win tomorrow."
"The team did a great job," said Potolicchio, who scored his first Formula SCCA podium finish. "I set my own pace and made the most of my opportunities. I look forward to being here on the podium on regular basis."
Completing the top-five is Justin Pritchard, of Granville, Ohio, in the No. 12 Mantac Ltd. PHD Racing Formula SCCA, who started sixth and Kristoffer Szekeres, of Hartland, Mich, in the No. 6 Dynamic Technology/DocSS/GuePe' Prolific Racing Formula SCCA, who started eighth. Race two of the doubleheader is scheduled to get the green flag at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, April 25, 2004.
