Futrelle Wins First Formula SCCA Race in Home State
BRASELTON. GA. (April 25, 2004) - Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga., won Round Four of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Road Atlanta. Completing the top-three is Elivan Goulart, Huntington, Conn. and Enzo Potolicchio, of Venezuela.
Completing the Drift Atlanta doubleheader, race two got underway early Sunday morning. Getting the green flag, the field stormed into the difficult turn one, with Goulart maintaining his pole position ahead of Futrelle. Working around the 2.5-mile track, Futrelle repeatedly challenged Goulart, in the No. 70 www.dolphinmotorsport.com/Bob Berman Dolphin Motorsports Formula SCCA, taking the position prior to starting lap two. Driving the car to its limits, Futrelle, in the No. 97 Meco Inc. of Augusta Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA, built a small lead. Not willing to let the lead duo to pull away, Potolicchio, in the No. 22 Fondo Unico Social Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA, attacked the course. Running in close formation, the trio built a sizeable gap on fourth place, as Justin Pritchard and Jonathan Klein battled for position. After maintaining the gap the majority of the race, Goulart closed on Futrelle in the closing laps. Looking to be in position to challenge for the lead, Goulart made a mistake, ensuring Futrelle ran contested to the finish. At the checkered flag, Futrelle had captured his first career Formula SCCA Championship victory by 1.09 seconds. Following the two rounds at Road Atlanta, Goulart leads the point standings with 118 points, ahead of Futrelle (84 points) and Potolicchio (80 pts).
"It's great to win my first Formula SCCA race," said Futrelle, who led all 18 laps. "I knew the key would be the start and the opening lap. The team did a great job finding what we were missing yesterday."
"I was trying to make the pass and just made a small mistake," said Goulart, who has won three of the four races in 2004. "Once again the team did a great job and we're very happy to leave here with the points lead."
"The changes we made last night really helped," said Potolicchio, who finished on the podium in both races at Road Atlanta. "We were able to run the same pace as Franklin [Futrelle]. First and third is a great result for Comprent Motorsports."
Completing the top-five is Klein, of Long Grove, Ill. in the No. 26 Nexus Distribution/Ironclad Performance Wear/Midwest Steel & Services Andersen Walko Racing Formula SCCA, who started 10th and Chris Meredith, of Potomac, Md., in the No. 79 Abbale Motorsports Andersen Walko Racing Formula SCCA, who started eighth.
