Goulart Stretches Points Lead With Formula SCCA Pole at Road Atlanta
BRASELTON, GA. (April 23, 2004) - Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn., captured the pole position for Round Three of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Road Atlanta. Completing the top-three is Chris Meredith, of Potomac, Md. and Jonathan Klein, of Long Grove, Ill.
Following a full day of pre-event testing on Thursday, the Formula SCCA cars took to the track for qualifying Friday just prior to lunch. In ideal conditions, the drivers set about attacking the high-speed 2.5-mile road course. After making changes early in the session, the times began to fall, with Goulart, in the No. 70 www.dolphinmotorsports.com/Bob Berman Dolphin Motorsports Formula SCCA, posting the fastest lap. As the session progressed, the times continued to drop, with Meredith closing the gap to Goulart. By the midway point of the session, Meredith, driving the No. 79 MII Security Consultants Andersen Walko Racing Meredith Racing Formula SCCA, had posted a time within 0.200 of a second of Goulart's fast time. Having moved into third on the charts, Klein looked to be in contention for the pole position as well. Unfortunately, just past the 15-minute mark of the 30-minute session, Klein, in the No. 26 Nexus Distribution/Ironclad Performance Wear/Midwest Steel & Services Andersen Walko Racing, retired with a mechanical failure. In the late stages of qualifying, the top-three remained unchanged, with fourth and fifth position swapping places repeatedly. At the checkered flag, Goulart had captured his first career Formula SCCA pole position, with a lap of 1:27.065 (103.371 MPH).
"The track was pretty good today," said Goulart, who won both rounds at Sebring. "We made some changes to the car that worked really well. I'm looking forward to the race and trying to keep my win streak alive."
Completing the top-five in qualifying is Enzo Potolicchio, of Venezuela, in the No. 22 Fondo Unico Social Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA and Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga., in the Meco Inc. of Augusta Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA. Green flag for Round Three of the Formula SCCA Championship is scheduled to drop at 9:50 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2004.
