Goulart Extends Points Lead With Win Number Four at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, ONT., CAN. (May 21, 2004) - Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn., won Round Five of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Mosport International Raceway. Completing the top-three is Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga. and David Jurca, of Federal Way, Wash.
Commencing midday, the Formula SCCA Championship got the green flag under cloudy skies. Getting a great jump at the start, Goulart took the lead into turn one, ahead of Futrelle. After capturing the pole position earlier in the day, Futrelle immediately began to pressure Goulart. Pushing theirs cars to the limit, the duo steadily began to build a lead on third through fifth, which were nose-to-tail. Getting a good run on Enzo Potolicchio, Jurca moved into third on lap two. With track conditions not ideal for their car setups, both Goulart and Futrelle began to slide throughout the 2.459-mile road course. By the midway point of the race, Goulart, in the No. 70 www.dolphinmotorsport.com/Bob Berman Dolphin Motorsports Formula SCCA, had built a sizeable lead on Futrelle, in the No. 97 Meco Inc. of Augusta Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA. While the lead trio were evenly spaced apart, a great battle ensued between Potolicchio and Shawn Morrison for fourth place. While the position never altered the two cars ran nose-to-tail, with Morrison unsuccessfully looking for a way past. At the checkered flag, Goulart had won his fourth race of the season by 13.22 seconds, ahead of Futrelle and Jurca, in the No. 14 Motion Dynamics Racing Formula SCCA.
"I got a great start," said Goulart, who now leads the point standings by 39 points over Futrelle. "The track conditions had changed a lot since qualifying, so we were really sliding out there, but I think the fans liked it."
"We just missed the setup a little bit", said Futrelle, who has finished on the podium in four consecutive races. "We got some valuable points and I think we learned some things that will help us tomorrow."
"Everyone was running really fast laps today," said Jurca, who returns to the series at missing the last two rounds at Road Atlanta. "Hopefully we can go faster tomorrow and can challenge for the win."
Completing the top-five is Potolicchio, of Venezuela, in the No. 22 Fondo Unico Social Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA and Morrison, of Conway, N.H., in the No. 16 Motion Dynamics Racing Formula SCCA.
Race results from Saturday's Round Five 18-lap, 44.262-mile race at Mosport, with finishing position, starting position in parentheses, driver, hometown, car, laps and distance behind leader or reason out.
