LAKEVILLE, CONN. (July 3, 2004) - Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn., won Round Seven of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Lime Rock Park. Completing the top-three is Robbie Pecorari, of Aston, Pa. and David Jurca, of Federal Way, Wash.
As part of the American Le Mans Series New England Grand Prix, the Formula SCCA Championship took to the 1.53-road course late in the day, for race one of the doubleheader. Following qualifying earlier in the day, Goulart led the field to the green flag. Going three-wide into the famous big bend corner, Franklin Futrelle took the lead, ahead of Goulart and Justin Pritchard. Pushing his car to the limits, Futrelle went wide on the exit of the downhill turn on the opening lap and spun of-course, ending his race. Once in the lead, Goulart, in the No. 70 www.dolphin-motorsports.com/Bob Berman Dolphin Motorsports Formula SCCA, immediately set about posting the fastest laps of the race. As Goulart steadily pulled away, Pecorari, in the No. 18 SAI Hydraulics Andersen Walko Racing Formula SCCA, began to close on Pritchard in second place. At the halfway point in the race, Pecorari got alongside Pritchard after maneuvering for several laps. Out breaking Pritchard in the big bend corner, Pecorari took the position. As the race progressed, Pritchard began battling a poor handling car and spun in turn four. Managing to avoid contact with Pritchard, Jurca in the No. 14 Motion Dynamics Racing Formula SCCA, moved into third place. Dealing with lapped traffic in the closing stages, the gap between the lead trio fluctuated, with no changes in position. At the checkered flag, Goulart had won his fifth Formula SCCA race of the season by 8.437 seconds.
"Franklin [Futrelle] got a great start to take the lead and I just tried to pressure him," said Goulart, who now leads the point standings by 53 points over Futrelle. "Once I was in front I pushed for the car to build a gap. Winning at my home track in front of friends and family is great. We'll try to make it two in a row on Monday."
"The car setup was pretty good", said Pecorari, who did not take part in pre-event testing on Friday. "I was hoping traffic would allow me to catch Elivan [Goulart], but things didn't work out. I think with a few minor changes we'll be battling for the win on Monday."
"The car came in midway through the race," said Jurca, who is now only two points behind Futrelle in the point standings. "I know we can get more out of the car, so I'm looking forward to the race on Monday."
Completing the top-five is Pritchard, of Granville, Ohio, in the No. 12 Mantac Ltd. PHD Racing Formula SCCA and Kristoffer Szekeres, in the No. 6 Dynamic Technology Inc./GuPe' Prolific Racing Formula SCCA.
