TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 18, 2003) --Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn., won the first of the North American Championships Formula SCCA doubleheader races at Heartland Park Topeka Saturday and Franklin Futrelle, of August, Ga. won the second.

In what would be one of two spilt start races that included Formula SCCA and Sports Racing Pro Series cars, Goulhart, who was the polesitter for race one, took the lead on lap 7 and then proceeded to dominate the remainder of the race. He powered his No. 70 Enterprises Formula SCCA entry to victory circle, winning by more than 13-seconds (at an average speed of 85.717 mph) over second-place Kris Szckeres, of Hartland, Mich., and third-place Steve Stadel. Goulhart' win was his second of the 2003 season.

With two laps remaining in race one, Formula SCCA Atlantic Tour point leader Jeremy Treadway's No. 12 Stonebridge Sports and Classics Enterprises entry was forced to retire due to a broken gear box. He was running third at the time.

In the second split start race, the top three drivers finished the way they started on the grid. Polesitter Futrelle drove flag-to-flag to capture his first win of 2003 and he did it in impressive fashion, winning by 14.661-seconds at an average speed of 84.423 mph. It was Futrelle's second podium finish of the season.

Mirl Swan, of Platte City, Mo., and Szckeres, qualified and finished second and third, respectively.

The Formula SCCA and Sport Racing Pro Series season finale race is set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19 at Heartland Park Topeka.
