Treadway takes maiden win in new formula car; Maisey wins Sports Racing Pro Series.
ALTON, Va., (June 17, 2003) -- Chip Herr, of Litiz, Pa., put on a dominating performance Sunday at VIRginia International Raceway, in Alton, Va., to capture his third Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires Atlantic Tour victory of the season, part of the SCCA North American Championships weekend. Niki Coello, of East Troy, Wis., and Shawn Dewey, of Townsend, Del., completed the top three.
Driving the No. 24 Warwick Autopark Miata, Herr set the pace in both qualifying sessions and continued to show that speed when the green flag dropped. Never putting a wheel wrong, Herr was able to open a large gap on the 19-car field and cruise to a 30.046 second victory.
Scott Fredericksen, of Hightpoint, N.C., and Greg Stasiowski, of Washington, Pa., completed the top five. Joseph Traut, of Sharon, Mass., was named the Sunoco Hard Charger for improving the greatest number of places during the event from his original qualifying position.
Herr had entered the weekend tied atop the Atlantic Tour point standings with Payton Wilson, of Gainesville, Va., who dropped out of the event early with mechanical issues. With the win, Herr takes over sole possession of the points lead with 102, followed by Stasiowki with 90, Dewey with 89, Ryan Pilla, of Amagansett, N.Y., with 76 and Wilson and Brian Kleeman, of Towson, Md., tied for fifth with 70 points.
In other SCCA North American Championships action, Jeremy Treadway, of Ticonderoga, N.Y. captured the maiden Formula SCCA victory of the new formula car from SCCA Enterprises, besting Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga., and Ken Erb, of Raleigh, N.C. While Treadway and Futrelle piloted the new, four-cylinder Mazda-powered car, Erb finished on the podium in the venerable rotary-powered Formula Mazda car.
In the Sports Racing Pro Series, Bill Maisey, of Hampton, Va., captured his first victory of the season, with C. David Suess, of Charleston, Mass., and Allen Childress, of Ranoke, Va., completing the top three.
The next event on the 2003 Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires schedule is Aug. 1-3 at historic Road America, as a part of the CART Champ Car weekend. For more information, please visit www.sccapro.com.
