SCCA North American Championships complete exciting weekend of racing at Beaverun.
WAMPUM, Pa. (May 4, 2003) -- The SCCA Pro Racing North American Championships Atlantic Tour returned for a second day of racing on the 1.6 mile road course at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, Pa., as part of the BeaveRun Spring Sprints Weekend.
The race winners were Niki Coello, of East Troy, Wis., in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires; Richard Spicer, of Laurel, Md., in Pro Spec Racer; Jonathan Holtzman, of Birmingham, Mi., in the Sports Racing Pro Series and James Goughary, Jr., of Palm Beach, Fla., in Formula SCCA.
Starting from the outside of row one in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires, Coello [No. 81 Pouredfoundations.com Miata] was able to get the jump on polesitter Kenneth Simonson, of Strongsville, Ohio, and lead the first 10 laps of the event. On lap 11, Saturday's race winner, Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., moved around Coello entering turn one to take the top spot. Coello and Herr would swap the lead several times over the next dozen laps, with neither driver able to open more than a car-length lead on the other.
Approaching the white flag, Coello and Herr crossed the line side-by-side, with spectators and SCCA Pro Racing officials preparing themselves for what looked to be a sure photo finish. Working the last lap, Coello was finally able to open a small gap on Herr and take the victory by a slim 0.381-second margin.
"That was probably the most fun I've ever had in a race car," said Coello, who finished second to Herr on Saturday. "We were able to run side-by-side lap after lap without any problems. I'd like to thank Mazdaspeed, Hankook Tires and Sunoco for supporting this series."
Polesitter Simonson ran in the top five all day and finished the event in third spot. Payton Wilson, of Gainesville, Va., received the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for improving the most places from his original qualifying position.
In Pro Spec Racer, Richard Spicer, of Laurel, Md., started from the pole position in the No. 65 Hagerman Engineering/Spicer Racing Engines entry and looked to be on his way to another win this weekend, having already won Saturday's Pro Spec Racer event. On lap 10, Neil Tilbor, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., had other plans as he passed Spicer entering turn one.
For the next 20 laps, Spicer chased the leader around the BeaveRun circuit with Tilbor never putting a wheel wrong. With three laps remaining, Spicer was able to retake the lead and open a small gap on the field. Pushing hard to regain the lead, Tilbor went off course in turn five, but was able to return to the track without losing second spot.
Spicer would go on to win the event by 5.672 seconds. Tilbor and Chris Current, of Silver Spring, Md., completed the top three with John Hagerman, of Street, Md., receiving the Sunoco Hard Charger Award.
In the Sports Racing Pro Series, Saturday's winner Holtzman was able to complete a sweep of the weekend, by leading every lap of the event from the pole in the No. 37 Comprent Racing entry. Sean Maisey, of Lanexa, Va., and his father Bill Maisey, of Hampton, Va., battled each other for the majority of the race, with the younger Maisey ahead of his father when the checkered flag came out on lap 37.
In Formula SCCA, polesitter Goughary [No. 27 Redline Oil/nativepool.net Formula Mazda] grabbed the lead at the start and never relinquished it, winning by 16.016 seconds over John Faulkner, of Pittsford, N.Y.
The four series that make up the SCCA North American Championships Atlantic Tour will next race together June 14-15, at VIRginia International Raceway, in Alton, Va. For more information on the SCCA North American Championships, please visit www.sccapro.com.
