Ostlund, Trenery Win ACRL Portland Rose City Race, Fresno Takes Team Title By Roger Diez

Portland, OR July 31, 1999 - John Ostlund of Team Fresno took his second win of the season, becoming the first repeat winner in the ACRL Western Division after four races. Ostlund took advantage of a second-lap melee between his teammate Steve Romak and Team Vancouver's Tom Kreger, moving his California Pistachios/Paul Evert's RV Center Lola into the lead and holding it to the checker. Behind him, Kreger recovered to hold second place in the Zupan's Markets/United Salad Lola, while Romak spun back to 10th. Peter Zarcades moved into second when Kreger retired with mechanical problems on lap 16, and Romak mounted a drive through the field to third in his Cal Body Steel Forming Lola, setting a new race lap record in the process. Romak also captured the VP Racing Fuels Pole Perfection award, although short of a new track qualifying record. Fiorenzo Tirinnanzi tied his best series finish, taking fourth in the Team Hollywood Carbir, and Rookie Sandy Popescu scored her first top five result for Team San Diego aboard her Swift DB5. Chris Ronson took sixth for Team Las Vegas in his Carbir after a miserable weekend of fighting gremlins in the car. Margie Smith-Haas finished seventh after a similar weekend of problems, and dedicated her race to her friend Kathy Rude Heimrath, who is battling cancer. First-time ACRL racer Charlie Hewett also overcame a difficult weekend to finish eighth after runnin as high as sixth, setting a very respectable 1:17.8 lap in the process. Local favorite Joe Giroski of Team Portland retired after the steering mechansim on his Tiga Wasp came adrift, giving him and exciting ride in turn nine. Defending Sports 2000 Champion Spencer Trenery returned to the series, and showed he hasn't lost any speed. Trenery, switching allegiance to Team Fresno, took both the pole and the win in his Fantasy Junction/ITLA Capital Swift DB2, but was harried the entire race by Bill Bachofner's Swift DB2 running under Team Las Vegas colors. Brother John Bachofner overcame an early spin to take third in the Aerocell-sponsored Sports 2000 race in his Team Reno Swift DB2. Ian Wood, the lone Canadian driver in the race, brought home fourth spot in the class for Team San Diego. The Sports 2000 cars had their own split start, owing to a season record entry of eight cars in the class. Team honors went to Fresno by virtue of overall finishes of first, third and ninth. The accumulated points total for Fresno was 259. Las Vegas finished second in team points, with San Diego third. The American City Racing League Western Division will hold the second round of the Motorsports Composites Triple Crown Oval Championship at Irwindale, California, on August 21. The ACRL series, using a unique team racing concept, races Cosworth-powered Super Sports 2000 and Ford-engined Sports 2000 cars, with drivers required to run Hoosier R-45 compound tires and VP Racing Fuel.
