Romak, Scully Win ACRL Oval at Mesa Marin, Las Vegas Takes Team Title
Bakersfield, CA, May 29, 1999 -- The American City Racing League thrilled the fans at Mesa Marin Raceway here in the second 1999 outing for the Super Sports 2000 and Aerocell Sports 2000 series. It was also the first leg of the Motorsport Composites Oval Triple Crown. Defending Champion Steve Romak proved he has lost none of his speed, taking both the pole and the win in the 75 lap race at the Mesa Marin 1/2 Mile oval in his Lola. Romak's victory was not an easy one, however. Team Las Vegas driver Chris Ronson dogged Romak's Team Fresno machine throughout the race, and finally surged to the front with a turn one pass on lap 70. Now it was Romak's turn to play catch-up, and he did, using the lapped car of Sandy Popescu of Team San Diego as a pick to come back for the win. Romak's move, in turns three and four on the final lap, put Ronson's Carbir on the outside of Popescu at a place where cars can't run three abreast. Romak, on the inside, accelerated to the flag while Ronson and Popescu did a do-si-do off of turn four, but continued. John Ostlund, Romak's Fresno teammate, finished third, the last car on the lead lap. Peter Zarcades of Team Las Vegas was fourth in a Swift , one lap behind after an early spin. Zarcades had a stirring battle with the Team Hollywood Carbir of Fiorenzo Tirrinanzi for the position. Tirinnanzi held on for fifth after having made some great passes in the early going. Team Reno's Scott Shelley brought his Swift home sixth despite a mid-race spin.
Team Reno's Rick Lee ran fourth for much of the race until retiring his Team Reno Carbir with engine problems. A similar fate befell former Champion Margie Smith-Haas of Team San Diego, as her Swift-Falcon spent most of the race in the pits with electrical woes. Her teammates, Jay Messenger and rookie Popescu, finished seventh and eighth respectively.
Once again, the new rule awarding points to a team's leading Sports 2000 finisher came into play. First-time ACRL competitor Michael Scully made his contribution to Team Las Vegas, assuring them the team victory. Scully started the race with virtually no practice time, spending the entire day rebuilding his transmission, but beat second-place S2000 finisher Jeff Anderson of Team Reno to the flag and the winners share of the Aerocell purse.
