CENTENNIAL, Colo. (November 28, 2001)-The SCCA Pro Racing Pro Spec Racer series has released its 2002 schedule. This year's campaign is slated for seven events kicking off with a season-opening doubleheader in Phoenix, and wrapping up with a return trip to Virginia in late October. In addition, a mid-August event will be announced at a later date.
For the second-straight year, the first event of the season will be held at Phoenix International Raceway, in Phoenix, Ariz. Only this year, the opener will be a doubleheader weekend, April 5-7.
From there, the series pairs with the GT and Touring Car series of the SCCA Pro Racing Speedvision World Challenge. Traveling north of the border to Mosport International Raceway, the series will participate for the eighth time in the classic Victoria Day Weekend, May 17-19. The June 20-21 Dodge/Save Mart 350 is up next for the Pro Spec Racers for the second-consecutive season. The high-profile event, headlined by the NASCAR Winston Cup series, is a tremendous draw at Sears Point Raceway in the picturesque Sonoma Valley of California.
Next up, the series returns to Canada and the Circuit Ste Croix after a year hiatus. The date is set for a July 12-14 weekend located in St. Croix, Quebec, Canada.
After a mid-August date to be announced at a later time, the series swings to the East coast for its final two events in October. The first will be a return to Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Conn., for the third-straight season. The series will once again be part of the Burnham Boilers 200 Weekend highlighted by the NASCAR Busch North Series, a fall classic that will be held October 11-12.
The final stop of the 2002 tour will be in Alton, Va. for the second-straight year at Virginia International Raceway, October 25-27.
"Once again, major dates with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and Busch North Series will contribute to the popularity the Pro Spec Racer series continues to gain every year," said Mitch Wright, Vice President and General Manager, SCCA Pro Racing. "These key dates, along with returns to Phoenix, Mosport, Lime Rock Park and Virginia, will make for a most exciting 2002 season."
