Kuala Lumpur - Aug 21, 2003 - Malaysia's first ever Formula 1 driver, Alex Yoong has accepted the invitation from team owner, Dato' Mokhzani Mahathir's invitation to join his Crest Jaseri Racing team's drive for charities in the Merdeka Millenium Endurance (MME) 12 Hr. race to be held next week on Saturday, Aug 30 at the Sepang circuit.
At the team launch in the Porsche showroom at Darby Park in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Dato Mokhzani, a well known Malaysian businessman and a successful racer who will be driving with Yoong along with Faizal Hakimi Jaafar said, "Alex's inclusion will boost the team's chances of winning and his contribution overall to the team is invaluable."
This is the fourth year of the team's participation in the Merdeka Millenium Endurance 12 Hr. race and each year the team had raised substantial funds for charities. The past record had been a fourth in the inaugural race in 2000 and a win last year.
Yoong himself was involved in the inaugural MME race in 2000 when he finished second with the TVR team.
In practice last week, Yoong was quickly up to speed clocking 2m 19s laps within 10 laps of getting familiar with the 390 hp Porsche GT3, a time that was on the pace with current Asia Porsche Carrera Cup pole time.
"I do believe we have a good chance of winning even though the competition is tough. I know we will be running a reliable car and I was surprised by its performance during testing. I'm very happy to be onboard with the Crest Jaseri Racing team and especially so when the fun is coupled with doing something good for the charities." enthused Yoong.
Team mate Faizal Hakimi, a former Asian Formula 2000 racer, said "I had driven a powerful car in 2000 and last year for the Petronas Eon Racing tem (PERT) and it wasn't such a shock adjusting to the Porsche. But I am still learning about the car from Alex."
Donations of a minimum RM1 per lap completed in the 12-hour race (approx. 260 laps) will be completely for the benefit of the Malaysian Liver Foundation, the Thalassemia Association of Malaysia and the Bangi Orphanage.
Tracing the history of his team's charity drives, Mokhzani explained, "I started this when I competed in the 2000 MME with Datuk Azman Yahya and Aminuddin Omar. We raised over RM300,000 that year and in 2001."
The public can pledge their donations to the Crest Jaseri Racing Team by contacting Radziwill Mohamad or team manager, Gary Khor at 03-5032 9000 or fax at 03-5032 9888.
Crest Jaseri Racing Team is supported by main sponsor Crest Petroleum Berhad, sponsors Multi Purpose Holding, Malakoff and HLA while TV3 Malaysia is the team's media partner.
Yoong's personal sponsors for the Merdeka Millenium Endurance 12 Hr. race are PanGlobal Insurance and AsianOverland Services. Information on PanGlobal Insurance and AsianOverland can be found at www.panglobal.com.my and www.asianoverland.com.my respectively.
