British GT racer Simon Pullan will compete in the Silverstone and Croft rounds of the 2002 Michelin Porsche Cup.
Pullan, 19, will pilot the Autosport Magazine and Porsche Cars GB GT3 Cup car as a follow up to his 2001 Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award nomination."Each of the Young Driver finalists have been invited to race the car at two different circuits this season," he explains."Porsche Cars GB had a very difficult job trying to accommodate the five of us taking up the offer to drive and I was delighted to be offered the Croft race. It's a fantastic circuit and all of my family live in Yorkshire so they'll be there to cheer me on."
The first of the two Porsche Cup rounds will mark a busy weekend for Pullan as the TOCA Tour joins forces with the British GT and F3 series for the second of three scheduled' super' weekends. Alongside his regular GTO quota of one twenty-minute qualifying session and a one-hour race, the Lincolnshire hot shot will also compete in the weekend's two Porsche Cup races."The super weekend is a very exciting proposition. The first of the two Porsche Cup races at Silverstone is a twelve-lap sprint race and then the second race the following day will be a longer feature race. All in all, I'll be taking part in three qualifying sessions and three races in the course of the' super' weekend.
"Driving both the Porsche and the TVR at the same meeting will be something I'll relish although I might be quite tired on Monday evening! Fortunately, the second outing at Croft won't be quite as frantic because there isn't a GT race that weekend."
Ironically, Pullan and his Rollcentre Racing team-mate Martin Short have found themselves pitted against the Porsche 911's of Tim Sugden/Steve O'Rourke and Godfrey Jones/David Jones in the first two races of the British GT Championship.
While Pullan and Short claimed first blood with victory at Brands Hatch, Godfrey and David Jones beat them to the flag at Donington Park last time out."The Porsche and Ferrari are our deadly rivals in the GT Championship. Having the chance to drive a Porsche GT3 cup car might give me some hints as to where our TVR is faster. Hopefully that will help my championship challenge. It also gives me valuable experience in a different car and learning to adapt quickly between the two will definitely be of benefit to me."
The Silverstone super weekend takes place June 01-02-03.
The Croft race weekend takes place July 13-14.
