Daly Double at Mid-Ohio with Ford Racing Mustang Challenge
Mansfield, OH (17 June 2008) -- Among the many long-brewing arguments in racing is the question of youth vs. experience.
This weekend, the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup will see a little bit of both in action as former Formula One and IndyCar driver Derek Daly and his 16-year old son Conor will both get behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang FR500S at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course during the Series' test day on Thursday, June 19. The Ford Mustang FR500S is the competition platform for the Mustang Challenge, which will stage round three of its 2008 championship at Mid-Ohio on Saturday.
The father-son combination will provide a unique perspective as they get their first taste of the Pony car racer on the Ohio circuit. Conor will arrive on a hot streak, fresh off an outstanding Fathers Day Doubleheader Weekend at Mosport International Raceway that saw him score victories in both Skip Barber National Championship and Ontario Formula Ford competition.
"I have only driven open-wheel cars before getting this opportunity to try the Ford Mustang, and it will also be my first time driving at Mid-Ohio, so it should be a fun experience," said Conor. "I know a lot of drivers are looking at the series, and after seeing them race at Mosport I can understand why. Now I'm just looking forward to seeing what its like from behind the wheel!"
The last time Derek Daly raced at Mid-Ohio, it was right in to the winners circle in IMSA GTP competition. With memories of that victory still fresh in his mind, Daly is looking forward to returning to the track at speed and add a new chapter in the father-son experiences that Conor's racing exploits have created.
"I think this is a great chance for Conor and his development as a racing driver to get some experience in a car like this Ford Mustang," said Daly, the long time racing school owner and coach. "He is very focused on his career in open-wheel, but the Rolex 24 At Daytona is certainly a "must-do" for any serious driver and getting some experience in a car that has a roof could be helpful if that opportunity were to develop. As a coach and a father, though, I have to admit that I am really looking forward to this. I won't want him bringing out the stopwatch on me, but I will certainly be enjoying this chance to drive this car and share another great day at the track with Conor."
