Buffomante Tops Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Practice at Autobahn
JOLIET, IL, 30 July - Tony Buffomante took his No. 34 Capaldi Racing Ford Mustang FR500S to the top of the time sheets in the first of two practice sessions at the Autobahn Country Club in preparation for the penultimate race weekend of the 2010 Ford Racing Mustang Challenge. Using the club's long circuit at 3.5 miles, Buffomante circulated quickest on his final practice lap of the morning, recording a time of 2:39.604 seconds.
In the second practice, Buffomante, who calls nearby Napierville, Illinois home, backed up his effort by setting the best time for the session, just shy of his morning best. His quickest lap was recorded at 2:39.981 seconds. All in all, Buffomante clearly had the pace of the field, being the only driver to post a sub 2:40-second lap.
"We were more dialed in during the morning. The set-up for the afternoon practice was not at all to my liking, but it's still good to have the best time in spite of it. We need to go all out for qualifying and get on the pole, and get as many points out of this weekend as we possibly can," said Buffomante.
Next up on the sheets for the day was championship combatant Jason von Kluge, who recorded a best time of 2:40.866 seconds in his No. 19 JVK Motorsports Mustang. His time was also set during the morning session, having found that the morning conditions offered more grip.
"I'm glad to be within shouting distance of Tony. He's really fast here. I'm not worried about the time gap though, as I think we'll find the pace on new tires tomorrow. Overall, I'm feeling good about the car," Von Kluge said.
Following the top 2 were young guns Kyle Gimple and Ben Crosland. The two racers bring some momentum to the weekend, each having won one race from the double-header event at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Gimple completed his best lap of the Autobahn track in 2:41.368 seconds. Crosland, who was the quicker of the two in the second practice, recorded his fastest lap at 2:42.216 in that second session, making him one of only three drivers to go quicker later in the day.
Brad Adams, John Scarlett and Richard Golinello rounded out the field as the racers and teams prepare for the penultimate race weekend ahead of the 2010 finale at Miller Motorsports Park.
Qualifying will be the one and only order of the day for Saturday. The Mustang Challenge field will see the green flag following a nearly idle day at 5:30 PM CDT. Expect much faster times with a with a very "rubbered-in" track on new BFGoodrich tires.
