Yoong to fly from Macau to Bathurst for the 24 Hour race
With the Bathurst 24 Hour looming, the SAE team are now fully prepared for the big race on November 22-23.
With a total mechanical refit, the SAE BMW will be operating at its full capacity come the race and should be a real contender due to the torturous nature of the event.
The car has been totally overhauled, and the expertise of Ernst Schlaepfer, renowned BMW engine builder has been employed which will no doubt make the car a force to be reckoned with come the race.
A shake down test of the SAE BMW was conducted on Friday at Eastern Creek, which confirmed all was ready for the assault on the mountain. Other than a minor oil leak from a fitting on the installation lap, drivers Geoff Full and Luke Searle had no problems and are rearing to go.
Team Owner David Searle stated, "After such an intensive refit you are always concerned that something might be out of place but this test has shown that we are ready to race. The car was quick for the conditions and didn't miss a beat all day, something we hope to duplicate on the mountain."
With the line up of talented 2002 Formula One and 2003 CART driver Alex Yoong, Alan Gurr, Luke Searle and Geoff Full the SAE team are confident of a class win, and are realistic about their overall chances with an engine size 5 litres down on other entrants.
"While a podium position would be very nice, we know that our chances are hampered by the power deficit but are confident that the legendary BMW reliability will be enough to pull us through this endurance event"
Alex, who will be participating in his first ever race at Bathurst, is looking forward to competing at the infamous track.
He will be racing at the Porsche Carrera Asia Cup at Macau the weekend before to get rid of any race rust, and will be arriving for the big event in Bathurst on the Wednesday 19th November directly after the Macau race.
"I can't wait to have a crack at the mountain and have been looking forward to this moment my whole life. I just hope that Alan, Luke, Geoff and I can use the great, reliable car we have been provided with to seriously contend a podium position come the race," Alex said.
