CARSTAR Monte Carlo driver completes double race weekend!
Russ Bond earns two top 10's - one in Ontario Pro Challenge Series, one in Honda Michelin
MOSPORT, ONTARIO -- "This has been one very long weekend," CARSTAR Monte Carlo driver Russ Bond said after completing his double race weekend. Bond was invited to compete in the Honda Michelin Challenge Series, part of the American Le Mans Series at Mosport. This was in addition to his regular duties behind the wheel of the CARSTAR/Dupont/Mobil1/Impact Race Products/Inside Track Motorsport News/Guysgarageshow.com Monte Carlo in the Ontario Pro Challenge Series.
Bond started Friday with a practice session at Mosport in the Honda Canada Honda Michelin Series #00 Civic. "Things went well, but the session was red flagged twice. This stopped me getting in a rhythm, but still I am happy with 10 quickest," Bond said after practice. On Saturday, Bond started the day out at Mosport for Honda Michelin Qualifying. "I was quicker by nearly a second, yet I fell back two spots. I didn't have a drafting partner and that was a big difference. Still, 12th is a workable deal, and tomorrow should be fun," Bond said after qualifying.
After Honda Michelin qualifying, Bond set sail for Sunset Speedway, site of round 8 of the Ontario Pro Challenge Series. "We had the CARSTAR Monte Carlo parked at Mosport all day -- it drew some attention -- so we could go straight from qualifying to Sunset."
The heats produced some mixed results for the CARSTAR Monte Carlo crew. "In the first heat, I went from fourth, to third, to eighth, back to fourth, and ended up sixth -- all in 10 laps! The second one was fairly straight forward, but we always seem to struggle getting a hold of the track here." In the feature race, Bond lined up sixth and finished sixth after a fairly lonely race. "We missed it -- plain and simple. We had enough to hold our position, but not enough to move up. Still, we scored points and solidified our spot in the championship."
Sunday it was back to Mosport for the Honda Michelin Challenge Series race. Bond moved up from 12th to ninth, before having an incident with another driver that sent him into the turn 9 wall. "It was a shame, we were gaining on the pack ahead of us. I think it was too early to start racing amongst ourselves -- oh well," Bond said of the incident. After getting his Civic restarted, Bond put on a charge back through the field to come home 10th. "Thanks to Honda Canada and Ralph Luciw for the opportunity to do this Honda Michelin Challenge Series race. It really is a very competitive series, and I am really lucky to have had the chance to race in front of this huge crowd at Mosport. The cars are really different compared to the CARSTAR Monte Carlo, and driving both on the same weekend was a little tougher than I thought it would be."
Next up for the CARSTAR Monte Carlo is round 9 of the Ontario Pro Challenge Series at Peterborough Speedway on Aug. 14.
The CARSTAR Monte Carlo is scheduled to be part of an Ontario Pro Challenge Series 'demonstration run' at the Mosport Road Course next Sunday afternoon, August 15, on the same course Bond competed in Honda Michelin this weekend.
