Robert Stout continues his quest for dual championships
Robert Stout added two more wins to his 2009 season in a three race weekend where the NASA series Mid-west region awarded points for the best two of three races over the weekend. With a rainy start to day one the first practice and qualifying session would happen in the wet but by race time the sun was shinning and the track was dry. Stout had his work cut out for him as he would start on the outside of the 6th row in 12th spot. At the drop of the flag his Lucas Oil backed Pro-Challenge Charger equipped with Kumho Tires screamed to life lighting up all of the E3 Spark Plugs but patience would be the key. He picked off a couple of cars going into turn one and never looked back.
By mid way point in the 30 minute race Stout had scratched his way to the lead only to have all hopes of winning eliminated two laps later after cutting down a left rear tire. The car was brought in and crew chief Todd Bellew and owner Ken Stout immediately started the prep work for race two of the day including a brand new set of Kumho tires.
Race two started everyone from the same position as the morning qualifying session so Stout would again start 12th. Full of confidence he could win, he again showed great poise and patience as he methodically pick off cars one by one until he was again back out front. This time the desired results were produced as Stout took his first overall win of the season along with his class win. Robert said "I really didn't know if I could get around the Super Touring R car as they run really well but once we got spread out I really started putting some laps together and this track is perfect for our car. It's hard on brakes and has plenty of turns so the guys with the big smoke can't run away".
Race three on Sunday found Stout starting on the pole after a solid qualifying effort. As he led the 15 car field to the start finish he hammered the throttle at the drop of the green flag. By the time he got to turn one he was safely in the lead but had to stay there for 40 minutes. Stout said "Our game plan was much different than usual. We use Hawk Brake pads and ran out on Saturday. This place is hard on brakes but we had never been here before so we thought we would be fine with one set. After Saturday we had to put in an old set and they were much harder and not Hawks! I had to adjust my driving style dramatically to survive the 40 minute race. I wanted to get a big lead early and then back off but again the STR car was right there with me for the first half of the race so I had to push but take care of the brakes. Finally he slowed a bit, dad and Todd untapped our brake ducts in front and I was able to back off just enough to keep things cool". Stout again hung on to earn two 1st in class and 1st overalls. Stout also took a commanding lead in the Mid-west regional points as they approach the midway portion of the season.
