Golinello's Great Start Continues at Mid-Ohio

LEXINGTON, Ohio--Richard Golinello knows a thing or two about getting a great start. The Ford Racing Mustang Challenge rookie earned his third consecutive GREENFilterusa.com "We're Going Green" Award during Sunday's race at Mid-Ohio, continuing his impressive first year in racing.

Golinello made his professional racing debut in March at Homestead-Miami Speedway behind the wheel of the No. 50 R&C Motorsports Ford Mustang. During the double-header round, Golinello earned Rookie of the Race honors in the second race. He has continued to impress ever since.

Mid-Ohio marked the sixth round of the season and the third race in which Golinello has won the GREENFilterusa.com "We're Going Green" Award for passing the most cars on the first lap.

Before getting that great start at Mid-Ohio, though, Golinello had to contend with a difficult qualifying. "We had a great setup and were running well in practice, but qualifying was a disaster," remarks Golinello. "The track temperatures soared to 120 degrees and there was so much rubber on the track that the car was sliding all over. I've never experienced track conditions that changed so quickly."

Golinello had to settle for qualifying 15th, though in each practice session he ran in the top ten. When the green flag flew for Sunday's 45-minute race, Golinello was ready to make up positions.

"The flag dropped and I just looked for openings. The first lap is always like driving in Manhattan during rush hour, so it's like second nature to me," says Golinello, who is originally from New York.

At the checkered flag, Golinello was 11th. "I found some things I need to focus on for the next race. I had a great battle for ninth with Brad Adams. I learned a lot from that and know what needs to be improved," Golinello says.

Golinello hopes to show off that knowledge during round seven of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge series, which will be at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Sunday, July 18. After Mid-Ohio, Golinello traveled straight to New Jersey to turn his first-ever laps at the track.

"Most of my competitors have been to New Jersey before, which is a situation I also faced at Mid-Ohio. Still, I think it's a track where I can do well," notes Golinello. "The track has a bit of everything, with technical aspects as well as high-speed sections."

Look for Golinello's great start to continue throughout the rest of his rookie season.
