Golinello Has Breakout Weekend in Mustang Challenge at Lime Rock
LAKEVILLE, Conn.--Lime Rock Park may well be Richard Golinello's new favorite track after the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge rookie had a breakout weekend there, qualifying third and running as high as second in only his fourth professional race.
Golinello, who had only visited Lime Rock once before for a test day, adapted quickly to the short 1.53-mile course. His No. 50 R&C Motorsports Ford Mustang was the second-quickest car in the second practice session of the weekend.
The speed continued in qualifying, where Golinello set the third fastest time to mark his highest qualifying position yet. His lap time of 59.142 seconds around Lime Rock was a slim 0.183-second off the pole position.
When it was time for Saturday's race, Golinello was confident about his chances for a podium finish. "Long Road Racing helped me set up a great car," he says. "We made some last-minute setup changes that made the car a lot faster, especially through the downhill section of the track."
At the green flag, Golinello immediately passed for second and was holding down that spot when a fuel pickup problem brought his Mustang to a halt on course. After such a promising start, the R&C Motorsports Mustang was out of the race.
Still, Golinello was enthusiastic about his weekend at Lime Rock. In addition to turning heads with his stellar performance, Golinello was also awarded the GREENFilterusa.com "We're Going Green" Award in recognition of his pass for second at the green flag.
"I timed it just right and took second right at the start. I had some pressure from behind and I had a good battle with Kyle Gimple," says Golinello. "We didn't get the result we wanted, but I was really happy with our performance. The weekend was unbelievably good for me."
Never one to rest on his laurels, Golinello went from Lime Rock to Mid-Ohio, where he drove in a test day on Monday. It was Golinello's first visit to the challenging track, but combined with his determination, natural talent, and input from driving coach Aaron Povoledo, Golinello picked up the pace quickly.
Golinello will travel home to Tampa, Florida, briefly before hitting the road again for this weekend's Ford Racing Mustang Challenge race at Watkins Glen in New York. Golinello proved at Lime Rock that he has the speed, and he'll be looking for a podium finish this weekend to cement his status as a top rookie in the series.
