STRONG SHOWING FOR LESTER AT PUKEKOHE GT3 FINALE
Fast rising New Zealand Porsche driver Jono Lester enjoyed a strong performance at the final round of the 2008/09 Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge at Pukekohe Park over the weekend, scoring a podium finish to conclude an eventful third year in the series in fourth overall.
Having finished second at the opening championship round at Pukekohe in November, 19-year-old Lester has fought car troubles and fallen foul of the officialdom on a number of occasions since, but looked to pick up where he left off upon returning to Pukekohe once again.
Lester qualified third in the Blackwoods Paykels GT3 and enjoying a competitive opening race just behind the leading pair of Craig Baird and David Reynolds, finishing within striking distance of the professional drivers ahead of him.
The weekend's second race was short-lived when Lester was dispersed by former International Motorsport team mate Daniel Gaunt at the opening corner, leaving him with a damaged rim and ending the young driver's hopes of securing the final podium spot in the championship also.
Lester started the sixteen-lap feature race at the rear of the grid and once again showed his pace around the bumpy 2.8km circuit to climb to fifth place at the finish.
"We had a rough ride this weekend like we've had all season," Lester said.
"But you know what? This has been the best event of the season for me. The car has run like clockwork all weekend and I've never been through an event feeling so confident in myself and the car.
At the business end of the championship you've got to expect incidents like that in race two, and while I don't agree with it, it made the final race of the championship a really exciting one. With Hamilton in a few weeks to conclude the season's racing I reckon we've got a superb package behind us with the support of Blackwoods Paykels, International Motorsport and my crew."
Jono Lester returns to competition at the Hamilton 500 on April 17-19, where a large contingent of Porsche GT3 Cup Cars are expected to thrill crowds in support of the Australian V8 Supercars.
