Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Ready for Lime Rock Park Debut
13 Aug 2008-(Tooele, UT)--The anticipation is high as one modern classic is scheduled to meet another this weekend when the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup debuts at Lime Rock Park as part of the Mohegan Sun 200 race weekend. This weekend's race will be round five of the 2008 inaugural championship season, which will conclude on September 21 with a double-header at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
While Saturday's race marks the first appearance of the Mustang Challenge at the historic Northwest Connecticut circuit, the Mustang name is one that has enjoyed scores of success at the 1.53-mile natural terrain circuit, which was recently repaved as part of an ongoing program of upgrades at the facility.
From local legend Sam Posey's victorious one-off Trans-Am race start in a Carroll Shelby Ford Mustang in 1969 and Parnelli Jones playing David to the factory Goliaths as he piloted the famous Bud Moore Mustang to a Lime Rock Park Trans-Am win in 1970 to Tommy Kendall's Lime Rock Park Trans-Am victory in a Mustang on his way to the 1997 Championship, there is plenty of Ford Mustang racing heritage at the track, which celebrated 50 years of racing last season.
But the Mustang Challenge competitors will be creating their own part of that famed history on Saturday, with another strong field ready to take the green flag on the traditional track layout.
Andrew Caddell has showed both speed and smarts with two wins and two runner-up finishes in four rounds of racing to date. His StableOne Racing teammate Terry Borcheller will keep pushing the championship leader, though, having won the most recent round at Barber Motorsports Park in July and will doubtless be working hard to make up ground in the point standings. Mid-Ohio race winner Jamie Slone will look to shake off a disappointing Barber outing and return to winning form on a track where he has previous racing experience.
The Mustang Challenge event will be part of the NASCAR Camping World East Series race weekend, with practice and qualifying on Friday in advance of Saturday's 12:05 PM race start. Results and story to be posted at www.MustangChallenge.com.
The Ford Mustang FR500S driven by Mustang Challenge racers rolls right off the same production line as the Ford Mustangs you see on the road every day, and can be ordered from any Ford dealer across the country.
The Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup is a new professional racing series co-developed by Ford Racing and Miller Motorsports Park. Utilizing the new Ford Mustang FR500S and sanctioned by the Grand American Road Racing Association, the Mustang Challenge series is a support series to major professional road racing events across North America. A competitive point structure and generous purses make the Mustang Challenge the perfect affordable, challenging platform for racers who want to compete in a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive car on a level playing field that will showcase driver ability in high-profile events.
