Caddell Takes Mustang Challenge Pole at Lime Rock Park
Lakeville, CT (15 August 2008) -- The field of racers in the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup showed both their speed and their mettle in qualifying on Friday at Lime Rock Park as the drivers emerged from qualifying session set in wet and varying conditions with another tight grid for Saturdays round five of Mustang Challenge competition.
Championship leader Andrew Caddell will start from pole position after setting a lap of 58.902 seconds for an average speed of 93.511 in the StableOne Racing Ford Mustang FR500S. Barber Motorsports Park winner Terry Borcheller will start alongside Caddell, as Mid-Ohio race winner Jamie Slone took third during the session to line up along side Carlo Sparacio on the second row.
"I was pretty amazed when the time came up on my dash just because it was fairly slick out there, but the BFGoodrich Tires still had plenty of grip and the times were close to what we did in the dry this morning," said Caddell, who will net five more points toward his championship ambitions with the pole. "I am also happy because the rain made it so we really had to drive the cars, so it's great to have both StableOne cars up front no matter what the conditions. I'm happy about that and I'm looking forward to another clean race with Terry tomorrow."
The weekend opened up with two practice sessions on the newly-repaved 1.53-mile traditional road circuit, which is also hosting a NASCAR Camping World East race on Saturday. After series officials moved the qualifying to an earlier time to make the most of the conditions, the field worked quickly to set times early in the session before rain returned to the area and prevented any late-session spoilers in the order.
"I'm frustrated because I got beat, but its still a StableOne front row so that's encouraging for tomorrow," said Borcheller, who has several wins under his belt at Lime Rock Park including a victorious Speed World Challenge run in a Ford Mustang in 2000. "I was waiting for the track to dry out and only had one qualifying run, but got held up a little bit on that lap. But then the rain picked up so I just missed my window."
"I'm pleased to be set up on the inside of the second row, I think it could be even better here than being on the outside of the front row," said Mid-Ohio race winner Jamie Slone. "I got everything I could out of the car in these conditions without doing anything reckless, so I'm pretty happy with this qualifying and am really looking forward to the race tomorrow in the GoPro Motorsports/Molecule Mustang."
