First Win for Washington Ferrari!
WATKINS GLEN, NY, June 23rd. The Scuderia Ferrari of Washington team, with a brand new factory-produced Ferrari 360 GT and a new sponsor, took its first GT win today in the six hour Sports Car Grand Prix at the historic Watkins Glen track. Drivers Bill Auberlen and Cort Wagner were more than four laps ahead of the second placed GT car, a Porsche 911 GT3R, at the checkered flag. The Ferrari finished sixth overall, behind five sports-racer prototypes.
"It was scaring me," said Wagner. "The car was so good all week -- the car was so wonderful to drive. It's a new chassis from Ferrari, and Girard-Perregaux is our new sponsor, and everything was just going perfectly. We had a couple of problems with the old car, and little minor things let us down and cost a couple of wins. We were holding our breath until the end, but this car was brilliant!"
"This was a long time coming for the Allie and the team," added Auberlen. 'They've deserved this for a long time. The car was perfect to drive all weekend, just perfect!"
For team owner Allie Ash, President of Ferrari of Washington, this was the realization of a goal. "It's been a long season so far," said Ash, "and finally everything came together. This makes it all worthwhile."
Famed Swiss watch manufacturer Girard-Perregaux had used the event to announce a new limited watch celebrating the Ferrari 360 GT, and a multi-year sponsorship of the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington team.
This was the first-ever appearance of the Ferrari factory's version of the 360 GT. The car had been announced in January of this year, and Washington received the first one to be completed. The car scored its initial win less than one week after arriving in the U.S.
