Danville, Virginia, April 27. Doug Peterson, driving for the Shelton Sports Cars team, won the first Ferrari Challenge race of the weekend at the historic Virginia International Raceway today. Peterson, a 2001 Ferrari Challenge winner at VIR, took pole position in qualifying and led every lap for the victory. The VIR event is the second of the 2002 Challenge season, for drivers racing specially built Ferrari 360 Challenge versions of the Ferrari 360 Modena.

Darius Grala, Peterson's 2001 teammate now racing for Ferrari of Orange County, joined Peterson on the front row of the grid and challenged for the lead, but a flat tire and the resulting pit stop dropped Grala from contention. J. D. Williamson II (Ferrari of Washington), Jose Luis Valera (Ferrari of Houston), Michael Pontoriero (Ferrari of Long Island) and Michael Louli (Ferrari of Ontario) had an extensive battle for second through fifth positions, with Williamson taking second and Valera third in the 30 minute race.

Virginia International Raceway was opened in 1957, with Carroll Shelby winning the first race in a Maserati 450S. Closed for many years, the 3.27 mile track was reopened in 1999 as a motorsports country club. The final race of the Ferrari Challenge weekend will be held on Sunday afternoon, April 28th, with grid positions set by the finishing order of today's race.
