WATKINS GLEN, NY, AUGUST 26. Charlie Arnott (NART Competition Daytona) and Peter Sachs (335 S) were the major winners at the last round of the North American Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge, conducted this weekend at the historic Watkins Glen track.

Arnott won his class both days over Tom Shelton, in a similar Competition Daytona, to take the 2001 Disc Brake Championship. 2000 Champion Todd Morici won the Saturday race in his ex-NART 512 BB/LM, just ahead of Rich Liebhaber in another 512 BB/LM. Chuck Wegner (512 S), Allie Ash (250 SWB Comp) and Bill Noon (308 Michelotto) were other class winners in the first race.

Morici took the initial lead in Sunday's Disc race, but was passed by Wegner on the third lap. Wegner and Lawrence Stroll (512 M) dueled for the balance of the race; Wegner turned the fastest race lap en route to his overall and class win. Morici, Noon, and Arnott were again class winners.

Peter Sachs clinched his championship with an overall win in the Drum Brake group on Saturday. Peter Giddings finished second overall (and won the pre-war class) in his ex-Nuvolari Alfa Romeo 8C/35).

Sunday's Drum race was highlighted by a three-abreast finish -- with an official margin of victory of just 0.026 seconds. Allie Ash was credited with the win, over Sachs, Giddings. Syd Silverman (250 GT TdF) finished fourth overall..

Previous champions Morici and Giddings were also presented with special "Masters" awards during the Sunday podium ceremonies.
