The first two races of the North American Ferrari Challenge event at Connecticut's Lime Rock Park were run on Friday, and 360 points leader Lucio Nicolodi (Ferrari of Beverly Hills) further extended his lead in the championship battle. Rain had caused the cancellation of qualifying, but Nicolodi still took pole position based on fastest times during the practice sessions.
Nicolodi led the Group A race for every scored lap. The race was briefly stopped to clear the 360 of Chris Wood (Ferrari of Ontario) after Wood crashed, then restarted with eight minutes left in the 30 lap race. The race ended behind the safety car as two separate incidents at either end of the front straight occurred with just a couple of laps to the finish, leaving insufficient time to clear the cars involved. Joining NIcolodi on the podium was Lew Bakes (Ferrari of Washington) and Doug Peterson (Shelton Sports Cars), second and third respectively.
In the Group B race Michael Ciasulli (Ferrari of Central Florida) led from pole position until late in the race, when he contact with a car he was lapping put him off the course at Lime Rock's "Big Bend" turn. Ciasulli was unable to restart, and Buddy Stubbs (Scottsdale Ferrari) took the win, just ahead of Joe Ponteriero (Ferrari of Long island) and Bill Rand (Ferrari of Houston). Rand had been near the front of the field until an early spin dropped him to last. He battled back through the field, taking third only on the last lap of the 30 minute race. Phillip Shearer (Ferrari of Long Island), the 355 points leader, extended his lead by winning the 355 class, over Michael Louli (Ferrari of Ontario) and Philip Bennett (Ferrari of Dallas).
The Saturday schedule includes the second race for both Groups A and B, four races for the Shell Historic Ferrari Challenge cars, and the one hour Endurance Challenge race. Local laws prevent racing at Lime Rock Park on Sunday.
