Irish drivers 1-2 at Indy Ferrari Challenge.

INDIANAPOLIS, IND., SEPTEMBER 29. Michael Cullen and Paddy Shovlin, both from Dublin, Ireland, finished one-two in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli race held immediately prior to the SAP United States Grand Prix today. Cullen passed his teammate to lead only the last lap, but it was the one which counted.

"It's a real honor to race here, to win and for us to have a one-two finish," Cullen said. "Coming out of Ireland, it's just so small, this is just a big day for us."

Championship points leader Darius Grala from the Ferrari of Orange County team passed pole-sitter Shovlin on the first lap of the race, scheduled for 30 minutes, but Shovlin retook the lead three laps later. Front-row starter Doug Peterson (Shelton Sports Cars team) consistently challenged the Irish pair but was unable to pass, and was initially credited with third place.

Grala and Peterson had contact while battling for the lead on Lap Four, and following the race both were penalized for the incident. In the final results Grala was awarded ninth place and Peterson tenth, the penalty moving Jim Kenton (Scuderia Ferrari of Washington) to the final podium spot.

Grala maintains his lead in the championship over Peterson, with one event left in the 2002 season. That event will be part of the Ferrari Challenge World Finals, at Misano, Italy on October 17-20.
