FORT WORTH, TX, APRIL 7. Qualifying was the highlight of the second day of the Texas Motor Speedway Ferrari Challenge event, first of the 2001 season.

Jim McCormick, racing for the Ferrari of Washington team, will start on the pole for the first Group A race on Sunday. Defending Challenge Champion Steve Earle (Ferrari of Houston) will start alongside McCormick; the pair battled throughout the 2000 season for the title. Carlos Hank Jr, returning to the Ferrari Challenge after a two year absence, will start third; his car is also prepared by Ferrari of Houston. McCormick's time of 1:29.475 establishes a Challenge record for track. The next five qualifiers are within 1/2 second of his time.

Pole position for the Group B race was taken by another Ferrari of Houston driver, Carlos Hank Sr, also returning to the Challenge with his son. Pierre Schroeder (Ferrari of Long Island) and George Flefel (Ferrari of Washington), both drivers new to the Ferrari Challenge, will start second and third. Ferrari 355s will compete in the Group B race; Jay Wilton (Ferrari of Orange County), Phillip Shearer (Ferrari of Long Island), and Michael Louli (Ferrari of Ontario) were the three fastest qualifiers in 355s.

There will be two races each for Groups A and B on Sunday; the grid for the second race will be set by finishing positions from the first. In addition, there will be a one hour "Endurance Challenge" race to close the day.
