Borcheller Up to the Mustang Challenge at Barber
Leeds, AL (20 July 2008) -- The 45th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang will be celebrated at Barber Motorsports Park in April of 2009, but Mustang fans got a sneak peak at a display of pony passion on Sunday with round four of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup. Terry Borcheller won the 45-minute race ahead of StableOne Racing teammate and Mustang Challenge Championship points leader Andrew Caddell as Carlo Sparacio rounded out the podium with his best result of the season to take third.
Caddell started the race from pole position, but it was fellow front row starter Borcheller at the point by the end of the first lap. The Mustang expert never looked back, as Borcheller withstood Caddell's race-long pursuit and his late race charge to score a photo finish for StableOne Racing with a .670-second victory.
"The BF Goodrich Tires stayed with me the entire time, and Andrew (Caddell) really kept me honest," said Borcheller. "He did a great job. StableOne Racing gave me a great car, and for us to have a one-two and also a third team car finish in the top ten is a good day for the team!"
Caddell showed why he's ahead in the Mustang Challenge standings with his relentless pursuit of Borcheller and also showed that beyond being just a fast driver, that he has an experienced head on his young shoulders.
"There was no passing Terry today," said Caddell, who grew his championship lead with the pole points he took on Saturday as well as his Sunday run to second place. "I was pushing, but I wasn't going to try something stupid with a reckless pass. This is a great result today for me in the championship and for Stable One Racing. There were no team orders-just no crashing each other. I'm really happy with my race and how this entire weekend went."
Sparacio was also pleased after powering the TC Motorsports Mustang up to third to convert third on the grid to third at the finish.
"Andrew and Terry were really quick, and I just focused on running my own race and keeping the BFGoodrich tires under me," said Sparacio. "I didn't want to burn through them trying to keep up, so I just focused on keeping the gap I had over Pratt (Cole). I was pretty nervous on the restart, because Pratt has a lot of experience and can be pretty aggressive. But I was able to hold him off and build up a gap over him again to the finish."
In addition to the traditional podium celebrations, several other participants picked up awards as part of the post-race celebrations.
Mike McGovern picked up the BFGoodrich Tires "Take Control" Award for picking up the most positions during the race with his run to fifth after starting from 12th on the grid.
Kent Jordan will be sporting a close shave in the coming weeks, scoring the Barbasol "Closest Shave" award after crossing the finish line in eighth just .533 seconds ahead of D Rick Edwards.
Terry Borcheller added to his race winnings with a $250 check for scoring the "Zantrex-3 Insta-Shot" award for leading the most laps on Sunday.
Carlo Sparacio added to his podium take with the Sunoco "Setting the Standard Award" after showing teamwork, sportsmanship, and a strong measure of both camaraderie and competitiveness during the Barber Park race weekend.
Mustang Challenge will race again on August 16th at Lime Rock Park for round five of the 2008 championship.
