Lancer pair score first win in Bathurst Production Car Enduro.
AFTER four years' trying and with a little luck, Mitsubishi Lancer drivers Gary Young and Michael Brock secured their first victory in the annual GTP Exide 2-Hour Showroom Showdown at Bathurst's Mount Panorama today.
The duo went into the race not expecting to win, as their Turbo Evo VI could carry only 50 litres of fuel, which meant the team would always have to make one more pitstop than their rivals.
However, determination and consistency prevailed in the end as Young crossed the line 16 seconds clear of polesitters Graham Alexander and John Woodberry in a Mitsubishi Evo VII.
Nissan 200SX team of Don Pulver and Tony Wilson finished third.
Brock and Young made their move for the lead with 30 minutes to go, but after a splash-and-dash pit stop, fell about 47 seconds behind the Nissan.
However, they were handed a lifeline when leader Tony Wilson slowed with engine problems.
It wasn't long before Young took the lead and with it the victory.
"We were always expecting a tough race because we couldn't carry the same amount of fuel as the other cars. I feel really sorry for Don and his team, but that's racing," Brock said. "I'm very happy with the whole team and Gary Young in particular. He drove a good race, as did all the cars in the field. The slower cars were no problems and it's a credit to them as well.
"It's the first time we've won a race and to win it at Bathurst is something special. We're very, very happy indeed."
One result which surprised many fans was the effort of Class C team Platetronic and drivers Andrew Miedecke and Richard Gartner.
The pair drove superbly to finished sixth overall in a Mitsubishi Mirage, while the Holden Astra of Martin Doxey and Dave Mertens took honours in Class B with 12th outright.
The winners completed 295 kilometres over the two hours at an average speed of 146 kmh.
