An unprecedented number of New Zealand Touring Cars will contest the gruelling AMP Bathurst 1000 over the first weekend in October 1998. At least ten cars have made the commitment to attend the event - more cars on mass than at any time in the history of the event. In addition, the teams will fly in around 100 Kiwi personnel to campaign the cars at Mt. Panorama.
Greg Eaton, Chief Executive of the AMP Bathurst 1000 Event Management Team was in New Zealand on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th August to meet with the teams and brief them on freight, customs and event issues and to finalised details for the event.
Mr Eaton announced that New Zealand's television audience of approximately one million will be treated to hourly roundups of the New Zealand Touring Class during the race giving them by far the best coverage New Zealand Motorsport has ever had at the event. The potential for companies, particularly National and Australasian companies to benefit from the television exposure that 463 million viewers in 109 countries brings is enormous. Tickets sales have also been strong, indicating that around 30 thousand spectators will be trackside to watch the race.
Increasingly the New Zealand Touring Car 'S' Schedule is being used as a basis for discussion by both media observers and event organisers who want to develop an International Touring Car Class. The idea of bringing the Super Tourer and 'N' Schedule cars under one set of regulations raises some exciting possibilities for the future of the sport.
It is expected that the cars will be loaded into containers for Australia around the 17th September and depart for Sydney on the following day. They will join the other 35 -40 cars on the grid to swell the number of cars to approximately 50.
