Porsche competitors have contributed a new category to the PROCAR Champ Series, with the Australian Porsche Drivers Challenge set to start a four-round series next weekend at Oran Park circuit, near Sydney.

The Challenge will comprise two Saturday afternoon races at the season's remaining PROCAR independent rounds at Oran Park, Phillip Island and Winton, with the finale at Mount Panorama during the Bathurst 24-Hour weekend.

Known previously as the Australian Porsche Cup and still run by the Victorian-based Porsche Racing Association, the Australian Porsche Drivers Challenge is due to field 28 cars -- ranging from GT3 to 944 Turbos - in three classes at Oran Park.

The Class A Porsche GT3s also are eligible for Group Two of PROCAR's Donut King Australian Nations Cup Championship and six are entered for that series' fifth round races on Sunday.

The Porsches have contributed to a record total entry of 163 cars in seven categories for next weekend's event.

PROCAR Australia Deputy Executive Chairman John Cowley welcomed the Porsche drivers and said they would give an important boost to the PROCAR Champ Series.

"The Porsche Racing Association President Martin Wagg is the leading Porsche driver in the Nations Cup and I'm extremely pleased that he has now brought his fellow Porsche competitors on to the PROCAR program," Mr Cowley said.

"We are able to offer them up to five races on a weekend and in turn they will add greatly to the entertainment value of our events."

Martin Wagg said the incentive of racing on the PROCAR program had boosted the Porsche ranks.

More than 40 cars already had been registered for the Bathurst round and he predicted pre-qualifying to cull the field would be inevitable.
