Official 2008 Formula Mazda Racing Schedules Announced
All of the Formula Mazda schedules have been announced, and it looks to be another busy year in the paddock for all of the Mazda teams. With four series to compete in it is certainly a schedule to fit every driver's goals and budget.
The Formula Mazda Challenge Series, which is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been working on partnering with major sanctioning bodies for months and has finalized dates with the San Francisco Region of the Sports Car Club of America and the Northern California based National Auto Sport Association. "There were many advantages to going with the SCCA & NASA," stated Formula Mazda Challenge Series Administrator Eric McCombs.
"First off, the SCCA testing and entry fees are low, and most of our drivers are already licensed by them. NASA was able to grant special exclusive sessions for the Mazda powered Formula Cars, which was not available through SCCA Club Racing. Both SCCA & NASA events are fully staffed with the support we need to provide a safe and professional racing environment. By working with both entities the FMC will be able to race half of the weekends at Infineon Raceway and compete in a good mixture of events."
The Star Mazda West Coast Series schedule is a great mix of spectator and club level events that is designed to minimize travel costs while still providing some TV exposure. Three of the eight weekends will be broadcast on Speed TV. This year the series will feature races with Champ Car, SCCA, NASA, and the American LeMans Series at Infineon Raceway, Portland International Raceway, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, and Miller Motorsports Park.
The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear released its 12-race 2008 schedule in early December, and is beginning the season with its traditional date at the 56th annual Mobil1 12 Hours of Sebring on March 14 and winding up at the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on October 18. The most substantial change to the schedule involves the series' first-ever appearance at Watkins Glen with the Grand-Am Rolex Series on June 7. The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear is set to begin its 18th season as one of the premier North American open-wheel driver development series and will feature an educational mix of circuits in both the U.S. and Canada, including three street circuits, two airport track and seven natural-terrain road courses. All 12 races during the 2008 season will be broadcast on SPEED TV.
After the regular 2008 season ends the Formula Mazda Challenge will once again be administering the 2008-9 Star Mazda Winter Series presented by Standing Start. This is a great way to get started for 2009 if you are a new driver, or working with a new team for the following season. The five race series takes place over three weekends starting in November and ending in January.
