Barker aims to get a monkey off his back.

Veteran Cliff Barker will be aiming to get a monkey off his back at the Toyota 1000 Desert Race, round three of the Bankfin Off-Road Championship, in Botswana from June 21 to 23.

The Botswana event is one of two races on the national off-road calendar Land Rover stalwart Barker, a former South African champion, has never won. Barker missed out on winning the recent Nissan Sugarbelt 400 in KwaZulu-Natal, the other race he has yet to win, but would like to narrow down the statistics by finally winning the Toyota 1000.

Barker and co-driver Vic Campher, now running under the Land Rover Financial Services banner, will again be out in the trusty Land Rover on the Botswana event. The opening events of the season, the Barberspan 500 and the Nissan Sugarbelt 400, have produced disappointing results for the pair, but Barker remains upbeat.

"The Land Rover is highly competitive but we haven't had much luck so far this season," he said, "and in a championship as tight as the off-road series, you need a little good fortune here and there. I have come close to winning both the Nissan Sugarbelt 400 and the Toyota 1000 Desert Race on a couple of occasions, but a win has eluded me.

"Perhaps this is my year to put the record straight in Botswana, and that will leave only the KwaZulu-Natal race in the pending file."
