Eighteen-year-old Marthinus van der Merwe is the youngest co-driver in the SA Off Road Championship... presented by Absa.

The Vrede born teenager has been co-driving for his father, Johan, for two years in the Chavani Colt Rodeo and currently leads the Class D championship by one point from former champions Hein Grobler and Gerhard Prinsloo in the GBS Racing Nissan Hardbody.

Van der Merwe junior is a student in Grade 10 at Harriston English Private School in Harrismith and fits in working on the Colt between his studies and other interests, which include fly-fishing, hockey and tap dancing.

"Marthinus has shown great maturity in the rough, tough world of competitive off road racing," said father Johan. "He is not only an asset when it comes to assisting in the preparation of the vehicle but also in the cockpit where his navigation skills have been excellent."

"Sharing the off road racing experience with my son has done a lot for our relationship and it is a privilege to be able to engage in a past time that provides an opportunity for father-son bonding," added van der Merwe senior.

The youngster has ambitions to take over the wheel of the Chavani Colt from his father in time to come.

"I would dearly like to drive as well but will have to wait until I have obtained a driver's license and completed my studies," said Marthinus. "I plan to get my license soon and am confident that I will pass my final exams with flying colours."

The van de Merwe's will be in action during the forthcoming Queen Motor Spares Tarka 400, which takes place in the Tarkastad area on August 22 and 23.
