Vacation Vans Jeep The Dark Horse In Tarkastad
An outright win by a privateer should not be discounted in this weekend's Queen Motor Spares Tarka 400, round six of the MSA Off Road Car Championship.
Always a dark horse in class T of the Production Vehicle category is the crowd-pleasing Vacation Vans Jeep Cherokee, a monster truck capable of winning outright but plagued so far this year by niggling problems and some outright bad luck.
Arthur Abraham and Stratford Voogt will share the driving and Scott Abraham will occupy the navigator's hot seat, a job he has done with aplomb with a variety of drivers so far this year.
The privately-entered American-built V8 Jeep has threatened to upset the official factory entries' applecart on more than one occasion so far this year and Abraham is convinced its time will come.
The team was forced out of the O'Hagan's / Kopanong Hotel 500 by a leaking oil seal on steering box which the team was unable to repair. After the race the steering box was removed for repair and it was found that a giant thorn had lodged itself between the steering shaft and the seal, causing all the oil to leak out. A thorn tree branch had jammed itself between the chassis and the suspension of the Jeep.
"We're in good shape for the event," said Abraham. "Last year Stratford and Wiel journalist Elza Thiart provided something of an unwanted highlight of this event when they had a coming together with Apie Reyneke's Castrol Land Cruiser at high speed. The Jeep rolled and sustaining severe panel damage. Apie sportingly pulled the Jeep back onto its wheels and after some running repairs Stratford managed to get going again. Even though he'd hurt his back, he managed to stay at the wheel and bring the truck home and finish the event. This I what off-road racing is all about: sportsmanship and bravery. It's a tough sport."
The Vacation vans jeep off road team relies on product and technical support from Castrol, Champion Spark Plugs, Ferodo, Industrial Hardware and STP.
