Rebuild For Vacation Vans Jeep Before Carnival City Casino 400

The Vacation Vans Jeep off road team will be hoping a complete vehicle rebuild will lead to a maiden victory in his year's MSA Off Road Car Championship, when the Carnival City Casino 400 is run on November 16 and 17.

The Carnival City Casino 400, which marks the return of Sun International as major off-road sponsor, is the final event of the season and will settle a number of title issues. The Vacation Vans Jeep is out of the running where title honours are concerned, but drivers Paolo and Claudio Piazza-Musso and co-driver Scott Abraham are hoping to break the ice with a win in the highly competitive Class T category in the national series.

It is Abraham, son of vehicle owner Arthur Abraham, who has been busy with the rebuild of the American designed and built Jeep. In between studying for final year university exams, Abraham has been hard at work with input from the experienced Stratford Voogt and Giovanni Piazza-Musso.

Among the many changes made to the Jeep are a revised rear suspension, new crown wheel and pinions and the fitment of a new transfer case. It is hoped the transfer case will eliminate a spate of broken front side shafts that have plagued the Jeep this season.

"Scott has done a great job and for a change it will be a pleasure being able to drive the Jeep in 4x4 mode," said Paolo Piazza-Musso. "The vehicle has enormous potential, and before the starter motor broke off Scott and I went from 19th to 4th in the Production Vehicle Category on the recent Moreca Ford Caledon 400.

"If we stay free of the niggly problems that have plagued the Jeep throughout the season, Claudio and I reckon we have a shot at the overall win."

The Jeep is Goodyear MTR shod and team relies on technical and product support from Ferodo, Champion, STP, Castrol, Chicago Pneumatic and Industrial Hardware. Abraham senior, Voogt and Sarel van der Merwe have all driven the Vacation Vans entry during the season, but results have been disappointing.

"We all know the vehicle's potential," said Abraham, "but we have not been able to convert that potential into results.

"We are hoping that after the rebuild we can upset the more fancied factory teams in Class T."

The Carnival City Casino 400 offers off-road enthusiasts in Gauteng a weekend filled with entertainment. The route is spectator friendly with a number of vantage points, and an Off-Road Expo at Carnival City Casino will add to the festivities.
