Young rally driver Mark Thompson's debut with the Mitsubishi Ralliart factory team at the fourth round of the Australian Rally Championship, the Saxon Safari in southern Tasmania, is off after a heavy crash in testing.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI that 20-year-old Thompson and experienced Newcastle co-driver Dave Boddy were to have shared cannot be repaired in time for this weekend's event. Thompson was being accompanied by Iain Stewart, co-driver for Mitsubishi Ralliart's lead driver Ed Ordynski, on a test run late yesterday when the car rolled after hitting a ditch in the Derwent Valley.
