BATHURST CHAMPION MAKES TARGA TASMANIA DEBUT
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16: After having to withdraw from Targa Tasmania in 2004 due to V8 Supercar commitments, two-times Bathurst champion Tony Longhurst will make his Targa Tasmania debut in the 2005 tarmac rally, driving a brand new Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
Longhurst won Bathurst in 1988 in a Ford Sierra with Tomas Mezera, and again in 2001 in a Holden Racing Team Commodore with Mark Skaife.
The 47-year-old from the Gold Coast will compete in the 14th annual Targa Tasmania rally from April 26 to May 1 with his friend and navigator, Michael DeVere, also from Queensland.
Longhurst is yet to spend more time within the Targa Tasmania bound vehicle, but with twenty years of professional touring car circuit driving behind him, Longhurst is confident that the transition to 'rally-style' driving will not prove too challenging.
"With the V8 Supercars you drive on bitumen, so that is quite similar. I understand that you've got to finish any event without making a mistake and I've had twenty years of racing, so I hope it won't be too difficult to adapt."
"I think the hard thing for me will be working with a navigator and being on new territory. I've done one off-road race from Alice Springs to Finke and I was very competitive in that and enjoyed it."
Forming the basis for Subaru Australia's Rally Team cars, the 2005 4WD WRX STi has a turbocharged 2.0 litre horizontally opposed boxer engine, producing 195 kW of power at 6000rpm.
The Longhurst-DeVere team is one within a field of 285. Other leading entries in the drivetravel.com Modern Competition include seven-time Bathurst and Targa Tasmania Champion Jim Richards and his Tasmanian navigator Barry Oliver in a 2WD Porsche GT3, dual Nations Cup Champion Paul Stokell in a Lamborghini Gallardo, Queenslander Tony Quinn who placed second outright in last year's Targa New Zealand and fresh from their Rally Tasmania win, uncle/nephew team of John and Jason White in their Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II N1.
Targa Tasmania is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania.
