SUN CITY 400 WINS TOP ABSA OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD

The Sun City 400 scored a double when it was voted the best event of 2008 at the Absa Off Road Championship awards function in Johannesburg earlier in the week. It was the second year in a row that the Sun City 400, one of the longest running events on the Absa calendar, walked away with the top accolade. The race, organised by Off Road South Africa, was also voted best event in 2007.

"To say we are delighted with the award would be an understatement," said chief organiser Adri Roets. "I have a small but dedicated and highly competent team working with me, and the accolade is testimony to their hard work and their love of off road racing.

"It is also a just reward for a great many other people who put in long hours behind the scenes. Now we have an added incentive to turn this year's event into something special and make it three years in a row."

Roets also paid tribute to the ongoing support for the Sun City 400 from Sun International and Sun City.

"Without their input there would be no Sun City 400," said Roets. "We have a great working relationship with Sun International and Sun City, and the best event award is also a feather in their caps.

"They are enthusiastic supporters of off road racing, and we could not wish for better sponsors."

The Sun City 400 is one of eight events which make up the Absa Off Road Championship. Voting for the best event of the year is done by the MSA Off Road Car Racing Commission Exco and based on the organising parameters set by the MSA Off Road Car Racing Commission.

"Events are organised by six different clubs, and the standard of organisation in 2008 was exceptionally high," said Motorsport SA Off Road Commission president Richard Schilling. "There is no doubt this year's championship will be run to the same high standards, and the sport is fortunate in having organising clubs who are both dedicated and highly competent."

Also honoured at the Absa function were 2008 national champions in the Production Vehicle and Special Vehicle categories.
